Constructs

This series depicts construction workers, engineers and other laborers working in concert at large-scale sites on long-term projects which take a year or more to build. In addition to focusing on individual subjects and their collective actions, it documents the development boom in San Diego expected to double the population of several neighborhoods, while financially displacing some of the longer-term denizens. Since these images are informed by the artist's performance and Life Art training, they may be read like a musical score which can be interpreted through various sequence and presentation formats. Undercurrents relate to the fact that Linwood's father was a construction worker, hence the artist's gaze as a gay man suggests an homage in turns both private and public, erotic and heroic. When grouped into grids and constellations, these images reference each other and generate dialog through a process of relays thematically focused around highly coded activities funneled through the passage of time. For instance, one seven-foot wide grid of images showing two work partners donned with black and white cowboy hardhats, functions like condensed poetic visual stanzas. As an ongoing series, it grapples with memory, the momentary, issues of safety, seasonal labor, interdependence, and social facets of people's lives. This series was first exhibited in the Luxe Gallery at San Diego City College in 2024; featured by Medium Photo in San Diego, CA that year; and presented in its entirety at the Mission Valley Library in San Diego, CA in 2025.
