The County of San Diego Animal Care Shelter, built in 2026 is a 20,000 square foot facility in the City of Santee, comprised of kennels, an outdoor livestock area, and staff and customer site amenities. It will provide the Department of Animal Services (DAS) with a state of the art facility for the next 50 years, that will be used for animal intake during local disaster events. DAS provides animal-related law enforcement, sheltering, medical emergency response, and pet adoption services to the unincorporated areas of San Diego County. Images of the idiom, “It’s raining cats and dogs” was produced in response to the county’s open call for public artworks to be placed on the wall spaces in waiting areas, hallways, and comfort care areas which are intended to welcome visitors and people obtaining care for their animal, to adopt a pet, or sit with their animal to be comforted at the end of life.
