Volumes

We pass through history and carry it with us. Volumes explores how human bodies inhabit different types of social space, with an eye toward some of the artifacts left behind. Since the inception of the medium, the practice of foregrounding subjects within the frame has been used to convey a sense of scale. Francis Frith's 1858 photographs of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, for example, relay monumentality and distant history—in the way he positioned people in his compositions—as a kind of travel log and measuring device. This series similarly suggests dimensionality, the amount of stillness or visual noise across clusters of images, how we catalog histories, etc. Although photographs are typically considered quiet two-dimensional objects, their map-like qualities are highlighted here via depictions of unfolding stages of action. Presenting multiple vantage points all at once also connects what appears within, yet is suggested beyond, any given framing device. An initial suite of a dozen images from this series was exhibited in the Luxe Gallery at San Diego City College December 2025 through February 2026.
